Roberts Armory Saves Historic Boat from Scrapyard
Restoration Begins

Chuck Roberts - Owner, curator of Roberts Armory in Rochelle, Il recently acquired a World War II Higgins Boat which was headed for the scrapyard. The historic vessel is legendary in it's use to transport troops from ship to shore. When Roberts learned of the vessel and it's potential demise, he acted quickly to make arrangements to procure the historic piece and have it safely transported over 1,000 miles to the Armory in Rochelle. Restoration is already well under way and progress photos can be seen here:

Cantigny Preservation Workshop

On Sunday April 17, the NIC was invited to attend a day long Restoration and Preservation workshop at the 1ST Division Museum at Cantigny. The Presentation was conducted by Malcolm Collum a well known figure in the vehicle conservation arena. He is currently the Chief Conservator at the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum. From 1996 until April of 2008, he was a senior conservator at The Henry Ford in Dearborn, Michigan, where he was responsible for the care of half of the institution’s three-dimensional artifacts, including motorized vehicles, aircraft and horology. After earning an M.A. in Art Conservation from the State University College in Buffalo, New York, Mr. Collum pursued his studies of mechanical artifacts at the National Museum of Science and Industry, London, England and at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

The seminar consisted of a PowerPoint presentation including “The Pro’s and Con’s of Intervention”, “Long and Short Term Storage Treatments”, “Bright Work Care”, Lubrication”, and a list of resources. The notes from this event will be posted on the web site for reference.

Mr. Cullum was very knowledgeable in all aspects of restoration and long term care of classic vehicles. His presentation was very informative and the interaction between the attendees and him was entertaining. I personally learned many things I was either unaware of or misunderstood, especially in the Lubrication session.

Those who conld not attend missed a great session and can read the notes when they are attached to the web site. I look forward to working with the personnel at Cantigny in the future and joining them on mutual projects.
